FED UP [Xxii]

(..continued...)

“He said you stopped picking his calls and that you said you are fed up with him.”
Mabel felt a lump in her throat and tears rolled down her eye.
“Is that what he is saying?” she asked Margret.
“Yes,” Margret replied. “That’s what he told me when I confronted him.”
“He must be crazy,” Cynthia said. “He is very lucky it is not me he is dealing with.”
“When he said that,” Margret said. “I didn’t really believe him, because I know you and I know how much you love him. I knew if there was an issue, you would have told me.”
“Exactly,” Mabel said. “You know I don’t hide things about him from you.”
  “I know.”
“Even when he told me he wanted to marry me and we started sleeping together, I told you.”
“Yes you did and even though I was happy about it, I advised you not to rush until you were very sure.”
“Kai Segun segun.” Mabel lamented. “Na wa o.”
“I had to ask some other people,” Margret said. “That was when they told me what happened, but I know people can add salt and pepper to story so I still need to hear from you. Did you do him any wrong? What exactly happened?”
“I did not do anything o.”
“So tell me exactly what happened, both before and during the incident at the salon.”
                Mabel kept quiet.
“If you are not ready to tell me,” Margret said. “I will not push it.”
“I will tell you,” Mabel said. “Let me put myself together. I have been trying for days to forget the incident and move on.”
“I understand, but you know it is not possible to just forget it, especially since it just happened few days ago. You need to move on even with the memory fresh in your head.”
  “It is not easy.”
“No it is not but start by talking about it. The more you talk about it, the less hurt you feel. Don’t box your hurt in. Let it out.
  “Ok.”
Mabel still kept quiet as Margret drove on.
“Mabel why not tell her now,” Cynthia said. “We will soon get to the hospital and you don’t know how long we will spend there. Then you still have to see Mrs Biodun in the evening. So you may not have another opportunity to tell her what happened.”
“Don’t bother her,” Margret said. “If she doesn’t feel like talking about it, it is okay.”
“You need to hear it so you will have the correct version of what happened and know how to confront that animal.”
“Animal ke. I know you are angry but he is still my cousin o.”
“Your cousin that made my sister almost commit suicide.”
“What!” Margret exclaimed and almost brushed a vehicle she was overtaking.
“If I hadn’t met her on time, we would be telling another story now.”
  “Are you serious?”
“Now you know why I am as angry as I am now. If I meet your cousin, I will embarrass him.”
She turned to Mabel who just looked straight.
“Mabel tell me what happened na,” she said to Mabel. “Let me know how to deal with the matter. Remember I was the one who introduced him to you, so I feel responsible for all this mess. Let me help you clean it up okay.”
Mabel sighed and told her what happened. By the time she was done, they were close to the hospital.
“I can’t believe Segun did that to you,” Margret said.
  “He did o,” Mabel replied.
  “I will handle this myself.”
  “Ok.”
“Mabel turn let me see your face,” Cynthia said to Mabel when they got close to the hospital entrance.
                Mabel turned.
“Your eyes are red and your makeup is messed up,” Cynthia said.
“It doesn’t matter,” Mabel said. “Leave it like that.”
“It does,” Margret said. “People should not see you and be wondering what is wrong with you.”
“Whoever comes to hospital is not well na,” Mabel said. “Moreover I didn’t come out with my make up kit.”
“I have my mini makeup kit here,” Margret said.
“Don’t worry yourself. I will just dry my face and remove the tear stains. That’s all.”
  “Whatever you want.”
Mabel asked Margret to park before driving into the premises. Mabel used Margret’s small mirror and worked on her face.
“You are not going on a date o,” Cynthia told her when she was taking time.
“But she doesn’t need people asking her why she is looking bad,” Margret said.
“My back is paining me again. Please hurry.”
Mabel quickly rounded up and asked Margret to drive in. Margret drove in and parked.
“I will wait until you are done,” Margret offered.
“You don’t have to do that,” Mabel said.
“I am not asking you. I am telling you.”
“Alright. Come in with us then.”
Mabel alighted and helped Cynthia who was holding her waist with one hand. They waited for Margret to lock her car. Then they went towards Dr. Obinna’s office.
